Dear Friends,
“Rejoice in the Lord always; again, I will say, Rejoice.”
Philippians 4:4 (NRSV)
I am reaching out to you again in this lock down, a hopeless and uncertain situation! This reminds me of a certain family who was once in isolation as we read from Genesis chapter 7. Noah and his family (total of eight) were shut in the ark during the floods. Unlike Noah who was told by God that the floods would take 40 days and 40 nights, we have no idea when Covid 19 shall come to pass. Such moments of isolation can take away our joy and cause us to despair.
When we doubt the Lord’s existence or His love, faithfulness, or power, we become riddled with anxiety. Paul commands us to rejoice, not once, but twice! How can we rejoice in every situation of life? Is that even possible? Well, no… not exactly; but yes, in Christ! God intends that we see our circumstances through His eyes. Similarly, Paul’s command that we rejoice requires us to keep our eyes focused on our trustworthy Lord, so we’re not overcome by what is happening around us. Rejoicing arises from our joy whenever we focus on God’s grace and love during our circumstances, praising Him for His faithful presence in our lives- even amidst Covid 19.
Prayer: (By The Revd. Andrew Wood)
God who is found in beauty and brokenness, holy and gracious one,
By The Revd. Andrew Wood
Whose heart is torn by the suffering of your children,
You long for a world of justice and plenty for all.
Liberate us to share in that freedom offered by your kingdom.
Open our eyes to sense your presence in places of despair and fear,
Open our ears to hear your call to be salt and light in the world,
Melt our hearts, convert us to the needs of the other,
And move us to be your people, a people of justice and care,
For our world, for friend and stranger. Amen.
“And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Your Friend & Minister,
Revd. Adam Nyawo
